It was recently announced that Everllence will supply the compression technology for Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS project, one of the world’s largest carbon capture projects, located in Stockholm.
What does the project consist of?
The project, called BECCS Stockholm is one of the world’s largest Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) plants and is being built at the biomass power plant Värtaverket, which belongs to the energy company Stockholm Exergi. The objectives of the project are:
- Capture carbon dioxide released during the combustion of wood residues, such as wood chips and branches, which are used to generate heat and electricity.
- By capturing and storing CO₂ of biological origin, to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted.
- Once operational in 2028, the facility will capture 800,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
The project has financial support from the Swedish government and funds from the European Union, including carbon phase-out agreements with global companies such as Microsoft. All the CO₂ captured will be liquefied and permanently stored under the seabed of the North Sea through the Northern Lights project.
The role of Everllence
Formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions, this is a company with more than 260 years of history, which now focuses on decarbonization technologies. For Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS project, its contribution is to supply the electrically driven MAX1 compressor train, which includes the AG110 axial compressor and EN080 axial expander, designed to handle large volumes of flue gas efficiently and stably.
The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractor, SAIPEM, awarded the contract to the company because of the ability of its compressors to handle the gas flow once the CO₂ has been separated, preparing it for transport and storage.

This news reflects the renewed focus on solutions for industrial decarbonization by Everllence, formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions. In addition, it directly supports Sweden’s and the E.U.’s goal of being climate positive by 2030.
