European Energy has achieved a significant milestone by successfully producing the first e-methanol at its innovative Power-to-X plant in Kassø , Denmark. This progress marks a significant step towards decarbonizing fossil fuel-dependent industries by incorporating advanced technologies such as green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂.
How is e-methanol produced at the Kassø plant?
The plant, designed to achieve a production capacity of up to 42,000 tons of e-methanol per year , uses CO₂ from local biogas generated at the Tønder biogas plant. This environmentally friendly methanol is produced through a process that combines renewable hydrogen with biogenic CO₂, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and opening up new opportunities for the transportation and energy industries.

PtX technology as a solution for decarbonization
This achievement demonstrates that Power-to-X (PtX or P2X) technology is key to the energy transition. Using green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂, European Energy has succeeded in efficiently producing green methanol.
The Power-to-X process transforms renewable energy into sustainable liquid fuels , making it a critical solution for energy-intensive industries such as aviation and shipping, which still rely on fossil fuels.
The Kassø plant is the world’s first and largest commercial e-methanol facility , designed to supply industries and sectors that need sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. With the first production line up and running, the facility will be fully operational by the second quarter of 2025.
With the ability to generate green hydrogen from solar energy from the nearby Kassø Solar Park, European Energy’s Kassø plant is positioning itself as a global model of innovation and sustainability.
