Eni has taken a strategic step in its Asian operation with the start of gas extraction at Merakes East, located in deep water offshore East Kalimantan. This initiative is part of its roadmap to tap into the vast gas resources of East Kalimantan. gas resources in the Kutei in the Kutei Basin and consolidate its position as a major player in the Asia-Pacific LNG market.
New daily contribution from Merakes East
Located in the East Sepinggan block, of which Eni controls 85%, the Merakes East field is already contributing about 100 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), equivalent to about 18,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
[post_relacionado]Only 10 kilometers from the original Merakes field, the new infrastructure is directly connected via subsea link to the Floating Production Unit (FPPU), allowing for efficient logistical integration.
Gas extraction at Merakes East with operational efficiency
The start-up of Merakes EastThe commissioning of Merakes East, executed in less than two years from the final investment decision (FID), is an example of Eni’s agile approach to bringing new discoveries to fruition. The gas processed at Jangkrik is transported by pipeline network to the Bontang liquefaction plant, allowing it to be distributed both locally and internationally in the form of liquefied natural gas.
Collaboration with regulator SKK Migas has been key to this progress. Both players are working to increase local content and optimize Bontang’s installed capacity, while strengthening domestic supply.
Eni plans a comprehensive portfolio in Indonesia
With the start-up of Merakes East, Eni is continuing a strategy of sustained growth in the Asian country. The company is also advancing in the development of the Maha field and the North Hub and Gendalo-Gandang projects, which together could increase production to 2 billion cubic feet per day (BCFD) and 90,000 barrels per day of condensate.
In addition, Eni is in discussions with PETRONAS to form a joint venture to oversee upstream assets in Indonesia and Malaysia, which would allow synergies and consolidate a strategic position in the global LNG market.
