Electra has presented the design of its EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft, which performs ultra-short takeoffs and offers much cleaner air mobility. With capacity for nine passengers, the EL9 Ultra Short seeks to be an efficient air transport solution.
A hybrid-electric aircraft designed for the future
The Electra EL9 aircraft ‘s main engine, a small turbine generator with a hybrid-electric propulsion system, integrates fuel efficiency with the reliability of its compact size. In addition, it is equipped with blown lift, allowing the aircraft to perform takeoffs and landings in ultra-short spaces, such as the size of a football field, allowing it to operate from small regional airports or even grass fields and parking lots.
[post_relacionado]With a range of up to 330 nautical miles and the ability to carry up to nine passengers or 3,000 pounds of cargo, the EL9 is poised to deliver fast, efficient air service with significantly lower energy consumption than other aircraft. Its design also includes an in-flight recharging system, eliminating the need for ground charging stations.
The EL9’s hybrid-electric propulsion system is backed by years of research and testing. It uses four independent battery packs, powering eight electric motors distributed along the wing, providing high lift at low speeds.
With a takeoff range of 150 feet and a cruise speed of 175 knots, the EL9 is positioned as an efficient and affordable transport option for regional flights. In addition, it is certified to fly in icing conditions, ensuring its reliability in various weather conditions.
Electra’s announcement is supported by an impressive number of more than 2,100 orders from 52 operators around the world, representing a potential market of more than $8 billion. This global interest underlines the disruptive potential of the EL9 in the electric aviation industry.
Electra CEO Marc Allen highlighted that the EL9 has a new design, pointing towards a cleaner, more affordable and accessible future for air travel, with the first test flights planned for 2027 and certification and entry into service by 2029.
