The Government of El Salvador has launched an ambitious project to address the pollution of Lake Coatepeque , a major body of water located in the west of the country. With an investment of approximately 6.7 million dollars , the project’s main objective is the ecological recovery of the lake, which has faced serious environmental deterioration for more than a century .
Ultrasonic buoys: the key to combating toxic algae
One of the project’s most notable initiatives is the installation of 60 technological buoys at strategic points in the lake. These devices emit low-power ultrasonic waves , designed to prevent the proliferation of harmful algae that are responsible for water pollution, affecting its purity and, consequently, the public health of nearby inhabitants.
The buoys work by creating a constant pressure cycle in the upper layer of water, preventing algae from accessing sunlight and essential nutrients for growth. By blocking photosynthesis, the algae sink and decompose without releasing harmful toxins, helping to restore the condition of the water and reducing health risks to the population.
This effort is part of a series of innovative technologies that seek to promote sustainability and environmental management in the region. In addition to ultrasonic buoys, the project also includes a reverse osmosis system that purifies the water, making it suitable for human consumption . However, authorities clarify that, due to its volcanic origin, the lake’s water remains unsuitable for direct consumption due to the presence of sulfur and heavy metals .
Improvement of Lake Coatepeque
One of the most outstanding features of the project is the installation of monitoring systems that allow real-time monitoring of water quality, climate and volcanic activity in the area . This technology will allow detecting any changes in the conditions of the lake and responding quickly to any environmental emergency.
President Nayib Bukele and the Salvadoran Water Authority (ASA) have reaffirmed their commitment to ecosystem restoration and the well-being of local communities. Through this project, the Government seeks to improve water quality and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
