“The HIA Report” was published by the Hydrogen in Aviation Alliance (HIA), it outlines the steps needed for the UK to position itself as a global leader in hydrogen-powered aviation.
The alliance is composed of key players in the aviation, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors, who see hydrogen as an essential tool for the decarbonization of the airline industry and the creation of long-term sustainable jobs.
The main objective of hydrogen and the HIA report
[post_relacionado]The report highlights the need for a comprehensive industrial strategy for aviation, addressing aspects such as technology development, regulation, infrastructure, financial framework and hydrogen supply. The ultimate goal of the HIA report is to make hydrogen-powered flight a reality, thus preserving the enormous social and economic benefits that aviation brings.
The United Kingdom has already made advances in hydrogen-powered aircraft technology, from engine testing to the first flights of hydrogen-powered aircraft. These achievements position the country favorably to lead the way in hydrogen aviation, which would bring economic, employment and sustainability benefits.
However, to realize these advantages in the sector, an industrial strategy focused on long-term opportunities is required. A massive increase in hydrogen supply is essential, which implies acceleration of renewable energy generation and significant investment in hydrogen infrastructure and skills.
These are the six recommendations stated by the HIA report as guidelines to follow:
- Research and development of hydrogen-ready technologies.
- A hydrogen-ready AAC.
- Hydrogen-ready airports.
- Transition fund and incentives.
- Execute plans to meet hydrogen demands.
- A hydrogen-ready workforce.
Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet and first chairman of the HIA, detailed: “The UK is uniquely positioned to lead in the field of hydrogen, but we must act now to build on all the exceptional work that has already been done. Advances in hydrogen technology across the country are amazing, but they will be irrelevant if we do not complement them with the right skills, infrastructure, investment and regulation to support hydrogen aviation.
The HIA report details the critical steps and timeframe needed to achieve this. If we follow these recommendations, we will not only create opportunities, jobs and prosperity across the industry and the UK, but we will also contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation sector.”
