The Dominican Republic’s electricity system has reached new levels of operability by registering two simultaneous energy records. The country experienced a peak demand of 3,923 megawatts (MW) while, at the same time, it achieved a renewable generation record of 1,554 MW.
The impact of climate and the power system
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, explained that the increase in electricity demand is largely due to the high temperatures that have boosted the use of air conditioning systems in homes, businesses and industry.
[post_relacionado]Despite the challenge, the system has responded efficiently, demonstrating the strength of the current infrastructure. This climatic phenomenon has demanded the maximum response capacity of the system, and diversified generation has guaranteed its stability.
The record of renewable generation is a clear indicator of the country’s progress in the adoption of clean energy. The 1,554 MW generated come mainly from solar photovoltaic energy. photovoltaic solar energy (1,266.4 MW) and wind energy (257.8 MW), complemented by biomass. According to Santos, this achievement underscores that investment in renewable sources is yielding tangible results and contributing to the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels.
The diversification of the energy matrix is a technical advance and a national strategy to ensure price stability and environmental sustainability. Joel Santos assured that these records are the reflection of an energy policy that prioritizes investment in new technologies and the integration of different energy sources. Likewise, the ministry will continue to promote projects that strengthen the electricity infrastructure to respond to future challenges.
