The advancement of naval technology is about to take a radical turn with the launch of the first autonomous ship developed by DARPA : the USX-1 Defiant, a 240-ton vessel designed to operate without a crew.
This initiative is part of the NOMARS (No Manning Required Ship) program, which challenges traditional ship design by eliminating the need for humans on board , offering a more efficient and safer future for naval operations.
A design optimized for autonomous missions
[post_relacionado]The USX-1 Defiant, an autonomous surface vehicle, was completed in February 2025 and is already in the testing phase. This innovative prototype, measuring 180 feet long, has been designed from the ground up to operate autonomously in adverse conditions, with improved performance thanks to its hydrodynamic efficiency.
The vessel will undergo extensive testing both in docks and at sea , with the aim of demonstrating its ability to perform long and challenging missions without human intervention.
