The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council ( CSN ) has approved the application for the construction of the Individual Temporary Storage Facility ( ATI-100 ) at the Ascó nuclear power plant in Tarragona. This new space will be used for dry storage of spent fuel and radioactive waste, ensuring its proper management according to current regulations.

The ATI-100, independent of the current ATI in operation, will allow the waste management capacity of both units of the plant to be expanded. According to the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan ( PNIEC ) 2021-2030, this infrastructure will guarantee the plant’s operation until its decommissioning, with planning scheduled for 2027. In addition, the CSN has established specific conditions to guarantee nuclear and radiological safety throughout the construction process.

At an international level, the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the CSN and El Salvador strengthens the exchange of knowledge to promote the safe use of nuclear energy in future projects.
The CSN also approved measures in the health sector, authorising the installation of advanced radiotherapy equipment in hospitals such as Ascires in Valencia and the Doce de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid.
