Satellite telecommunications giant Intelsat has officially confirmed the total loss of its IS-33e communications satellite , following a technical anomaly that occurred on October 19, 2024. This event has generated a significant interruption in services for customers located in Europe, Africa, and parts of the Asia-Pacific region, affecting both businesses and governments that depend on Intelsat’s infrastructure.
Boeing and Intelsat investigate IS-33e satellite failure
The IS-33e satellite, which was launched in August 2016 and built by Boeing , experienced a technical failure that led to a complete loss of power and, consequently, the disconnection of its services. This model, which until now was located at 60 degrees East, was one of the pillars in Intelsat’s global communications network, serving commercial and government customers in various regions of the world.
[post_relacionado]Intelsat has reported that it is working closely with Boeing to fully investigate the causes of this failure. According to initial reports, a Failure Review Board has been convened, which will gather additional data and produce a thorough analysis. In addition, the company is in constant communication with affected customers, implementing service migration plans both on its own fleet and on third-party satellites, in order to minimize the impact on the continuity of operations.
Intelsat officials have said that although the loss of the satellite is significant, the capacity of its fleet allows them to react quickly to mitigate the consequences , but they believe that the loss of the IS-33e is a reminder of the challenges inherent in the space and satellite industry , where technological risks remain high despite advances in engineering and design.
