The Cobre Panama mine concluded a new audit as part of its ongoing compliance with the Environmental Impact Study, in the current period of preservation and safe management after the temporary cessation of operations.
This process brings to 43 the total number of audits carried out since the construction of the project, including 11 in the operational phase and 3 in this transition stage.

Jacques Wiertz, researcher at the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland, highlighted the professionalism of the audit team and the company’s commitment to responsible mining. Specialized personnel from Knight Piésold, a Canadian consulting firm focused on sustainable mining, also joined the team to evaluate critical issues such as the Tailings Facility and the Botija Pit.
At the same time, representatives of neighboring communities such as Nuevo Sinaí, San Benito and Nuevo San José, in the Omar Torrijos district, participated actively as observers during the days. This citizen accompaniment strengthened transparency and the link between the company and its social environment.
The commitment of the Cobre Panama mine
The result of the audit was categorical: no findings or observations indicating noncompliance were found. This result validates Cobre Panama’s good environmental management practices, its relationship with the communities, and its respect for Panamanian legislation.
Yoselina Miranda, a resident of Nuevo Sinai, stressed the importance of being able to directly verify the company’s actions and bring that information back to the neighbors. These types of initiatives, she said, strengthen trust and foster a culture of open information around mining.
The company also reiterated its willingness to continue integrating communities and experts in its environmental auditing processes as part of its strategy for responsible and sustainable mining in Panama.
