The CMA CGM SEINE, one of the world’s most advanced container ships, has been officially delivered to the CMA CGM Group by the Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua, part of the CSSC Group. This delivery was certified by the classification society Bureau Veritas (BV), marking the start of operations for the first in a series of four LNG-powered megaships with dual-fuel technology.
Dual-fuel technology and environmental standards
The vessel has a nominal capacity of 23,876 TEU and is powered by a WinGD W12X92DF-2.0 main engine that integrates the iCER system to reduce methane emissions and improve thermal efficiency.
[post_relacionado]This system enables compliance with IMO Tier III standards in both diesel and gas modes. It also features GTT Mark III membrane-type LNG tanks with a total capacity of 18,600 m³, designed to improve safety and operational autonomy.
CMA CGM SEINE: Innovation at the service of efficiency
To ensure safe operation in line with current technical requirements, BV and its BVS division collaborated closely with the shipyard throughout the design, testing, and certification process. CFD simulations were used to study the dynamic behavior of the LNG tanks, while the BOG compressors were also upgraded and recertified following sea trials.
In terms of operating technology, the CMA CGM SEINE is equipped with the SmartEye intelligent monitoring system and the TotalCommand control platform, which enable automated management of port maneuvers, reducing docking time and optimizing operations.
Energy efficiency is also enhanced by the use of variable frequency drives (VFDs) in pumps and fans, and by WinGD’s DCM system, which enables real-time operational analysis.
A firm step towards the decarbonization of maritime transport
This vessel is part of CMA CGM’s energy transition strategy, which seeks to significantly reduce its carbon footprint through the use of alternative fuels and smart digital solutions.
The delivery of the CMA CGM SEINE not only expands the French group’s transport capacity but also sets a new technical standard for environmentally friendly shipbuilding.
International collaboration for smooth delivery
During the delivery ceremony, representatives from all involved parties highlighted the technical cooperation and commitment to sustainability that made the project possible. The next three vessels in this series are expected to replicate the same characteristics and continue to contribute to the modernization of the global container ship fleet.
