The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, located in the mountainous province of Guizhou, is emerging as the highest bridge in the world. With a length of 1,420 meters and a distance of 625 meters above water level, this megastructure stands out both for its height and the rugged environment in which it was built.
Its function is strategic: it shortens the trip between Liuzhi and Anlong from three to one and a half hours, improving road integration in a key area for regional development. The project is part of a new highway that will strengthen connectivity between autonomous districts and special areas of the province.
Youth, wind and steel
[post_relacionado]One of the most striking aspects of the project is its team. With an average age of 28 years, the technicians and workers have faced extreme conditions since the summer of 2020, when inspections began in dense forests, cliffs and temperatures above 35 degrees.
The team’s youth has been key to meeting the bridge’s technical and physical challenges, from lifting beams weighing more than 200 tons to certified welds with millimeter tolerances.
The most intense stage was the crowning of the main tower, where 24-hour shifts and winds exceeding force 12 on the Beaufort scale put every maneuver to the test. Under these conditions, the team designed special high-strength scaffolding and an intelligent lifting system based on the Beidou satellite. Beidousatellite, capable of positioning each segment with high precision.
Technology and tourism around the world’s highest bridge
In addition to its role in regional transportation, the bridge will include a high-altitude suspended glass observation platform, along with panoramic walkways at the edge of the cliff. This integration will allow for a one-hour tourist circuit, connecting to other attractions such as the Huangguoshu waterfall.
The opening of the bridge and the resort will be simultaneous in the second half of 2025, marking a major breakthrough in the design of multifunctional infrastructure in China. As such, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge will break engineering records and redefine how structures can integrate with the natural environment and tourism activity.
