Boskalis, a Netherlands-based company specializing in marine services, has completed work on the construction of the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland, which is being developed by Ocean Winds.
Initially, the company put six vessels into action to carry out various operations in the Moray Firth on the east coast. As a preliminary step, its subsidiary Gardline conducted detailed geophysical and geotechnical studies prior to infrastructure installation.
Boskalis’ efficient work
[post_relacionado]The Rockpiper ship for the subsea rock installation, which was intended for the project, placed more than 110,000 tons of rock to prevent erosion around the 62 XXL monopiles critical to the project. The monopiles were transported in two phases by the White Marlin, a semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel that transported them from Asia to the port of Invergordon, Scotland.
From this point, the Bokalift 2, the company’s dynamically positioned crane vessel, was tasked with picking up the monopiles, whose weights ranged from 1,515 to 1,935 tons, and then installing them at sea by means of vibration and hydraulic impact .
In addition, Bokalift 1 was responsible for installing the park’s two marine substation platforms, which include transition pieces, upper structures and additional equipment, culminating its activities in February 2024.
Moray West offshore wind farm capacity
Boskalis said the Moray West project brought together a wide range of its capabilities and expertise, making a significant contribution to the energy transition in Scotlandby providing enough electricity to meet the annual needs of up to 1.33 million homes once operational.
The 882 MW generating capacity of the farm will be supplied by 60 SG 14-222 DD wind turbines, provided by Siemens Gamesa, and the project is expected to start generating power in 2024, with a projected lifetime of more than 25 years.
Ocean Winds a joint venture created by Engie and EDP Renewables, is in charge of the development. Under the recent power purchase agreement signed with the developers, Amazon will purchase 473 MW of clean energy from the park, representing more than half of its total capacity.
