Auckland has marked a turning point in maritime transport with the commissioning of the VS-9, the world’s first certified hydrofoil electric ferry . The innovative vessel, developed by Vessev and operated by Fullers360, is already transporting passengers in the New Zealand city, consolidating an achievement in the transition towards sustainable mobility on water .
VS-9 electric ferry: A new era for maritime transport
The VS-9 is a first-of-its-kind vessel, designed to provide a premium, zero-emissions travel experience. Thanks to its America’s Cup-inspired foiling technology, the ferry can glide across the water with unprecedented energy efficiency , reducing energy consumption by up to 95% compared to traditional vessels.
[post_relacionado]With a capacity of 10 passengers, the VS-9 reaches a service speed of 25 knots and a range of 50 nautical miles. Its lightweight design and high-efficiency batteries allow for rapid recharging using the existing electrical infrastructure in most marinas.
Fullers360 and its commitment to sustainability
Fullers360 , New Zealand’s largest ferry operator, has been instrumental in the introduction of the VS-9. The company aims to operate with zero emissions by 2040 , and this first electric hydrofoil ferry represents a vital step in that direction.

Expansion of electric hydrofoil technology
The success of the VS-9 has prompted Vessev to develop larger models, such as the VS-18, which will be able to carry up to 100 passengers and further extend the adoption of this technology on commercial and tourist routes. Collaboration with NetZero Maritime, Fullers360’s green division, is accelerating the certification and expansion of these models.
Hydrofoil technology improves the passenger experience by offering a smoother, quieter ride, and also reduces operating and maintenance costs. In recent trials, the VS-9’s cargo cost was 25 times lower than that of a fossil-fuel vessel on the same route.
