Air Liquide has announced the final investment decision to build ELYgator, a large-scale, 200-megawatt capacity electrolysis plant that will operate in Maasvlakte, within the port of Rotterdam. This development is supported by the Dutch government and partially financed by the European Innovation Fund, seeking to strengthen Europe’s low-carbon hydrogen production capacity.
The ELYgator project and European industrial decarbonization
With an investment of more than 500 million euros, the project aims to generate 23,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year. This volume will be used mainly to supply TotalEnergieswith whom Air Liquide has signed a long-term supply contract. In addition, estimates indicate that the power plant will be operational by the end of 2027.
[post_relacionado]The ELYgator project stands out for aligning proton exchange membrane(PEM) and alkaline electrolysis technologies at the same site. This integration seeks to maximize operational efficiency and diversify production capacity, making the plant a reference model for future projects in the European region.
This development has been supported by the Dutch OWE program and the IPCEI scheme, initiatives aimed at boosting the energy transition through green infrastructure. This favorable environment, coupled with the European regulatory framework, has been a determining factor in Air Liquide consolidating its commitment to sustainable mobility and climate neutrality by 2050.
With the ELYgator project, the French company strengthens its presence in the green hydrogen market and establishes itself as a strategic reference in reducing emissions in the industrial and heavy transport sector. In addition to supplying clean energy to its industrial customers, the electrolyzer will contribute to mitigating up to 300,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
