On June 3, Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales issued a statement that they are considering the construction of a new reservoir as part of their efforts to ensure water availability. This would provide capacity for 11 additional transits.
A new reservoir for the Panama Canal
This project arises in response to current climate and economic challenges to address current and future water challenges, ensuring a reliable water supply for human consumption and canal operations, crucial for global trade.
[post_relacionado]The communiqué also states that the water saving measures, the reduction of total transits and the optimization of the transit reserve system are part of the initiatives implemented to face volatility and improve operational efficiency; emphasizing that the relevance of the Panama Canal lies in its capacity to ensure the reliable passage of goods, with 40% of its traffic made up of energy commodities.
Although the actions regarding the system reduced the waiting times, the management is aware that the global challenges will not cease, therefore the creation of the new reservoir is seen as a “promising solution”, as long as they have the support of the government and the communities close to the basin area of the Panama Canal .
They also recognize the need to invest and innovate to ensure their sustainability in the face of changing threats and changes in trade flows.
