Eni and Q8 have entered into a strategic alliance to advance the construction of a biorefinery in the Priolo industrial park in Sicily, Italy. The agreement reinforces an industrial relationship that spans three decades and consolidates a new phase focused on advanced biofuels.
Preparations for the construction of the biorefinery in Sicily
As of this decision, the project has the approval of Eni’s and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation’s governing bodies. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation following the binding offer submitted by Q8. The initiative envisages the construction and subsequent industrial operation of the plant on the existing Versalis facilities, as part of a long-term conversion plan.
Thus, the future biorefinery will rely on Eni’s technological expertise and its Ecofining™ technology, designed to transform waste, residues and vegetable oils into biofuels that can be used even in pure form. This technical capability is key to meeting European regulatory requirements and the evolution of the energy market.
In operational terms, the facility will have a capacity of up to 500,000 tons per year and will offer the flexibility to produce hydrotreated vegetable oil and sustainable aviation fuel. This combination will make it possible to supply the road, maritime and air transport segments with alternatives that have a lower environmental impact.
The planned production will also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% compared to reference fossil fuels, in line with the European Union’s climate targets. The project is also part of Eni and Enilive’s biorefining growth strategy with a view to 2030.
As for the state of progress, the engineering phase has been completed and preparations for the award of procurement and construction contracts have begun. Preliminary work and permitting processes are underway while work associated with the new infrastructure is expected to commence.
Finally, the final permits will be obtained and the project will be fully implemented by the end of 2028. The reconversion of the Priolo pole seeks to ensure a more sustainable industrial activity, maintain local employment and strengthen the presence of Eni and Q8 in the development of mobility solutions with a lower carbon footprint.
