CF Industries' carbon sequestration plant starts operations

CF Industries starts up carbon sequestration facility

The company expects to capture and store up to 2 million metric tons of CO₂ per year.
El secuestro de carbono en Louisiana

CF Industries Holdings, Inc. has started operations at its new carbon dioxide dehydration and compression plant at the Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana. This facility will enable the transport and storage of up to 2 million metric tons of CO₂ annually that would otherwise end up in the atmosphere.

In collaboration with ExxonMobil, a key partner in this project, the captured CO₂ will be directed to geological sites where it will be permanently stored. For the time being, ExxonMobil conducts storage using enhanced oil recovery techniques, but with plans to migrate to dedicated storage in their CCS Rose project project once final U.S. EPA permits are granted.

Permits for carbon sequestration projects

On the other hand, the Environmental Protection Agency recently issued a draft Class VI permit for the Rose project, which could accelerate the development of a broader CO₂ storage network on the Gulf Coast.

This step is significant because it will allow CF Industries to produce approximately 1.9 million tons of ammonia. ammonia ammonia per year. This, in addition to improving its environmental profile, qualifies the company to benefit from 45Q tax credits from the U.S. government, granted for each ton of CO₂ safely stored.

Furthermore, this breakthrough consolidates CF Industries’ strategy: to decarbonize the largest global ammonia production network. The company is building its leadership in low-emission hydrogen and nitrogen products, thus driving the energy transition.
