AF Gruppen and Heerema Secure EPRD Contract for Platform Decommissioning

A 39,500-ton offshore structure will be removed in the UK with planned recycling in Norway over five years.
Contrato EPRD en el Mar del Norte

Offshore engineering takes on a new challenge. The consortium formed by AF Offshore Decom, a subsidiary of AF Gruppen, and Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has been selected to execute an engineering, preparation, removal, and disposal (EPRD) contract for a massive platform located on the UK continental shelf.

EPRD Contract for a 39,500-Ton Structure

The infrastructure, consisting of a topsides of approximately 27,500 tons and a substructure of 12,000 tons, represents one of the most complex removal operations in the region. The contract also includes the possible addition of a selection of conductors.

Technical studies are already underway. This will be followed by the detailed engineering and marine preparation phase, which will take place over the next three years. The physical removal will be carried out by specialized vessels from HMC in several campaigns.

Decommissioning with Sustainable Onshore Approach

Once removed, the structure will be transported to the AF Environmental Base Vats in Norway, where it will be processed for recycling and final disposal. This process is planned to be completed within the next five years and is part of a strategy focused on environmental management of offshore assets.

Capability and Experience as Key Factors

This contract reflects confidence in our technical and operational capabilities for large-scale projects.

Said Lars Myhre Hjelmeset, Executive Vice President of Offshore at AF Gruppen.

The award consolidates the consortium’s track record in the North Sea region, highlighting its ability to execute safe and efficient solutions in complex environments.

With this new project, AF Gruppen and HMC strengthen their position in the offshore decommissioning sector, expanding their service portfolio in the UK area and reaffirming their commitment to industrial sustainability.
