Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced in a statement the signing of a long-term charter contract for three new Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) vessels. The Japanese shipping company has reached an agreement with SCG Chemicals (SCGC), a subsidiary of Siam Cement Group (SCG), for the supply of these vessels that will strengthen ethane logistics between the United States and Asia.
About the charter party
The agreement responds to the growing demand for ethane as a feedstock for the production of ethylene in petrochemical plants . SCGC has decided to strengthen its supply chain with these transport units, ensuring stable logistics for its operations in Vietnam and Thailand.
[post_relacionado]With this contract, the VLEC fleet managed by MOL will reach 12 units , consolidating its position as one of the leaders in the transportation of ethane at a global level. The company maintains its commitment to the growth of the energy sector and the safety in the transportation of liquid hydrocarbons.
New vessels for the transport of ethane
The three VLECs, with a capacity of 100,000 m3 each , will be built by the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea and are scheduled for completion in 2027. They are designed with advanced technology tanks developed by the French company GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz), which optimizes the safety and efficiency of ethane gas storage. In addition, each vessel will feature a dual-fuel propulsion system, allowing for a significant reduction in polluting gas emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel- powered ships.
The use of dual-fuel engines on the new VLECs reflects MOL’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. These vessels will reduce the environmental footprint of ethane transport and comply with international regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.
