MAN Energy Solutions has announced that its liquid gas injection ammonia engine ( ME-LGIA ) has successfully achieved 100% load in large-scale testing at the Copenhagen Research Centre ( RCC ).

Since November 2024, engine testing has been ongoing, with loads ranging from 25% to 100% using ammonia as fuel . Ole Pyndt Hansen, head of research and development for two-stroke engines at MAN Energy Solutions, emphasised the significance of this development:
[post_relacionado]We have now run the engine on ammonia at 25 to 100% load, which is another important step forward in the maritime energy transition. We have thus validated the ammonia fuel injection system in the full load curve with the diesel pilot quantities recorded in line with our targets. In addition, the positive emission and performance characteristics of the previous single-cylinder tests have also been validated in full-scale operation of the engine.
Pyndt Hansen stated.
The company’s own selective catalytic reduction ( SCR ) system worked effectively in all tests, ensuring proper treatment of exhaust gases and minimising polluting emissions.
The next phase of testing will focus on optimising performance and emissions, with improvements to the injection systems and engine control strategies. In addition, MAN Energy Solutions plans to confirm the ME-LGIA’s power take-off ( PTO ) capability, ensuring its compatibility with other energy solutions within the company’s diesel cycle engine portfolio.

The use of ammonia as a fuel is emerging as a viable option to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport. Its application in low-speed engines such as the ME-LGIA represents a step forward in the adoption of clean energy in the shipping industry. In the coming months, the company will continue to optimize the system and prepare it for entry into the commercial market.
