Maersk and Nike are pleased to announce a unique opportunity for the public: the first official visit of a state-of-the-art container ship, one of the world’s first methanol-powered vessels, arriving in Los Angeles in mid-August.
Maersk and Nike to introduce environmentally friendly fuel ship
The vessel, designed for its maiden voyage with green fuel and capable of carrying more than 16,000 TEUs, will be christened in a private ceremony at the Outer Harbor in Los Angeles on Tuesday, August 27. Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, will attend the event along with guest speakers from Nike and prominent state and local officials. Nike, as a partner in the ceremony, shares Maersk’s strong commitment to decarbonizing supply chains.

Venkatesh Alagirisamy, Nike’s supply chain director, highlighted the company’s responsibility to promote sustainable innovations that contribute to achieving zero carbon emissions and zero waste. By collaborating with suppliers like Maersk, who share this vision, Nike increases the use of biofuels in its shipping, the primary first-mile delivery channel.
On Wednesday, August 28, Maersk will open the doors of the 350-meter vessel for the public to tour. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the sailors’ living quarters and visit the bridge. To attend the tours, it will be necessary to register and obtain a free ticket through the website that will be activated in August.
Maersk’s new container ships
This vessel is the fifth in Maersk’s fleet capable of operating on green methanol, an alternative to conventional oil. Maersk continues to investigate various alternative fuel options with the goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
In addition, Maersk’s new container ships include design innovations, such as the location of the crew quarters and bridge at the bow, and a single funnel at the stern. These features allow for greater container capacity and operational efficiency at ports. Maersk has commissioned the construction of 20 additional methanol-enabled vessels.
