The Korean Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) has unveiled an automated mooring system that promises to transform the maritime industry. This innovation, designed specifically for autonomous ships , combines an advanced hydraulic mechanism with vacuum suction cups, eliminating the need for traditional cables.
Automated mooring transforms maritime operations
Previously, ship mooring depended on complex manual procedures requiring high-strength cables. However, the new system developed by KIMM, in addition to improving docking accuracy, also significantly reduces the risk of accidents and labor burden . With this solution, vessel securing is done quickly and safely, thanks to the integration of state-of-the-art hydraulic technology and advanced control.

The technology has been highlighted among the top ten mechanical innovations of the year in Korea, and its performance will undergo final testing in 2025. According to Dr. Yongjin Kim, lead researcher of the project, this system is a crucial step towards a more efficient and safer future for maritime operations .
