The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has taken a crucial step in Arctic exploration by launching its first research vessel, the Mirai II . This state-of-the-art icebreaker, built at the Japan Marine United shipyard, becomes one of the most advanced platforms for studying the effects of climate change and sea ice conditions.
Features of the Mirai II research vessel
The Mirai II is 128 meters long and can accommodate up to 97 people, including 34 crew members and 63 researchers. With a tonnage of 13,000 tons, the vessel is designed to navigate year-round in waters covered by first-year ice and is capable of breaking ice up to 1.2 meters thick at a speed of 3 knots.

Although the Mirai II was officially launched on March 19, 2025 , its construction will continue until its completion, scheduled for fall 2026. This research vessel represents a breakthrough for Japan and a valuable tool for global studies on climate change and polar ecosystems.
