In a preliminary evaluation phase, an interoceanic train project is being considered that could represent direct competition for the Panama Canal. This ambitious plan seeks to unite the two most imposing oceans on the planet, the Atlantic and the Pacific, by means of a railroad.
The government proposal focuses on the creation of a rail corridor that would facilitate the transit of passengers and goods between Cupica, in the department of Chocó, and Turbo, in Antioquia, crossing the vast expanse of the Darién. This project is promoted by UPIT, with the objective of fostering the economic development of Chocó, promoting infrastructure that minimizes environmental impact and respects the region’s biodiversity and critical ecosystems.
Could the interoceanic train replace the Panama Canal?
[post_relacionado]Intended to be a viable alternative to the Panama Canal, the project contemplates the construction of a railway line of almost 199 km, incorporating more than 11 km of tunnels and approximately 132 km of viaducts, with an estimated operating capacity of 16 trains per day. In addition, there are plans to build a specialized port in Cupica Bay for the efficient handling of maritime containers, with an inauguration scheduled for 2025.
The estimated investment for this colossal project amounts to some 25 billion Colombian pesos, not including the costs of acquiring the locomotives and supporting infrastructure. On the other hand, the budget earmarked for the port’s development is estimated at US$341 million.
Project in pre-feasibility phase
Currently, according to data provided by the Transportation Infrastructure Planning Unit (UPIT), the project is in the prefeasibility phase, during which environmental, geological and hydrological aspects are being evaluated. This stage involves a detailed analysis to determine market needs, resource requirements, revenue and cost projections, as well as the potential benefits of the project.
It is important to note that the feasibility studies are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, after which the project will undergo feasibility, design, construction and operation phases.
