AIM-listed natural resources company Deltic Energy has revealed a significant gas discovery at the Selene field in the UK’s southern North Sea. Shell -operated well 48/8b-3Z reached a total depth of 3,540 metres on 17 October 2024, revealing a 160-metre-thick section in the Leman Sandstone , confirming the presence of gas in the reservoir and the underlying Carboniferous bedrock.
Fluid sampling data and pressure readings confirmed an active gas column above a water-gas contact around 3,370 metres in sand B, one of the most promising intervals within the formation. According to updated structural maps, a gas column of up to 100 metres in height is estimated , and initial analyses indicate that it is a high-quality dry gas, with no presence of hydrogen sulfide .
Gas development potential in the Selene field
[post_relacionado]Based on preliminary information, Deltic Energy has updated its volumetric estimates for the field. The recoverable resources of Selene are estimated to total 131 BCF , with a range of 95 to 176 BCF, approaching pre-drill projections. The higher concentration of these resources in the upper B sand suggests a more economical and simplified development option, with the potential for higher gas yield per well.
In addition, the quality of the B sand reservoir has exceeded previous expectations, with a thickness of 53 metres and a porosity of 12.1% , which increases the chances of recovery. These results improve the initial forecasts for Selene and, according to Deltic , reinforce its expansion strategy in this region.
Deltic and Shell evaluate next steps in Selene
Once the platform is decommissioned, Deltic Energy and Shell will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the data collected, including core samples, fluids and pressure logs. This study will enable the optimisation of the geological model and resource estimates, with a view to making final investment decisions on the development of Selene. In addition, Deltic is evaluating the possibility of linking the development of Selene to the nearby, low-risk Endymion prospect.
The successful drilling of Selene confirms our capabilities in the subsurface and supports the strategy we have outlined. We look forward to working with Shell on the next steps in developing this resource, which promises to generate significant value for our shareholders.
