The Fortum company is making important preparations for the construction of a hydrogen production plant , located in Loviisa, Finland. The start of testing is stipulated in mid-summer 2024, and with an opening scheduled for the end of 2025.

The application and methodology used in the production of hydrogen will involve electrolyzers that will seek to take advantage of electricity , while managing to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen. The facility is expected to have a capacity of approximately two megawatts, sourced from the main electricity grid and using local Loviisa water.
[post_relacionado]Additionally, the project will include the creation of a service station that will provide hydrogen to industrial customers. This centre, which is being fully funded by Fortum through its research and development budget, will benefit from a design carried out mainly by in-house specialists.
The Kalla test center is expected to have a useful life of approximately two years , from its opening in 2025 to 2028. The budget allocated to research and development of this pilot project amounts to 17 million euros.
The implementation of hydrogen energy
It also plans to progressively explore the use of hydrogen by implementing smaller-scale projects in the Nordic countries. “This center will allow us to obtain crucial information not only on the design and operation of future larger plants, but also on the commercial opportunities that green hydrogen and its derivatives can offer.r,” explains Satu Sipola, vice president of Power-to-X in Fortum.
Green hydrogen, produced through clean energy sources, has the potential to replace fossil fuels and raw materials in several sectors, including steel and fertilizer manufacturing. Given its versatility, hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier, a replacement for fossil carbon in the production of steel and iron, and as a sustainable fuel.
