The first turbine has been successfully installed at the German offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 3. This wind farm, with an installed capacity of 913 MW, will become the largest offshore wind farm in Germany once it is operational. In addition, Borkum Riffgrund 3 globally by being the first offshore wind farm awarded without the need for subsidies, an achievement reached thanks to several long-term corporate power purchase agreements that Ørsted has signed with industrial and technology customers. This project is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure.
First turbine for Borkum Riffgrund 3
Recently, a fact was reached for Borkum Riffgrund 3, shortly after the first power was successfully delivered from the 253 MW Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm, which Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure are building simultaneously. Both projects together will almost double Ørsted’s total installed capacity in Germany, contributing to the country’s green transition. Borkum Riffgrund 3 is expected to be commissioned in 2025.
[post_relacionado]By 2024, Ørsted plans to execute the largest construction project in the company’s history, totaling approximately 7.6 GW of offshore wind power under development on three continents. These projects include the 2.8 GW Hornsea 3 in the United Kingdom, which will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. In early May, Ørsted celebrated the successful installation of the first foundations at its 704 MW Revolution Wind offshore wind farm off the east coast of the United States.
Peter Obling, Ørsted’s continental Europe director, commented that Borkum Riffgrund 3 represents a in offshore wind energy, being the first project awarded on a commercial basis and the first in Germany to exceed 900 MW. Obling expressed his pride in the installation of the first turbine and the expectation of completing this project.
An innovative energy connection concept
Felix Gschnell, program manager of Borkum Riffgrund 3 and Gode Wind 3, highlighted the development and construction of the project since they won the auction in 2017 and 2018. The installation of the first turbine represents a great success and a proud moment for the team. The focus now is on continuing the project safely and on schedule.
The first Borkum Riffgrund 3 turbine was installed by Seaway 7’s vessel ‘Seaway Ventus’, with support from Cadeler’s ‘Wind Osprey’. In total, 83 Siemens Gamesa turbines of 11 MW each will be installed, covering an area of approximately 75 square kilometers, 72 km off the coast of Lower Saxony in Germany.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is Ørsted’s first offshore wind farm in Germany to be built without an offshore substation. The innovative connection concept involves direct connection of the turbines via 66 kV cables to the DolWin epsilon marine converter platform operated by TenneT, the German transmission system operator. Turbine installation is underway at Gode Wind 3 (253 MW). Both projects are located near Ørsted’s operational offshore wind farms, Borkum Riffgrund 1 and 2, and Gode Wind 1 and 2.
These two new wind farms will nearly double Ørsted’s installed offshore wind capacity in Germany to approximately 2.5 GW. Operation and maintenance of these wind farms, like the existing ones, will be carried out from Norden-Norddeich and Emden in East Frisia, Germany, and Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
