The state-run China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has made a breakthrough in field exploration and made a gas discovery in the extreme depths of the South China Sea.
A major gas discovery
The Lingshui 36-1 gas field is located in the western region of the South China Sea, with an average water depth of close to 1,500 meters. The main gas field corresponds to the Quaternary Ledong Formation, with an average burial depth of 210 meters. This field has proven to be highly productive in the extraction of natural gas.
[post_relacionado]In addition, tests have revealed that the field can produce more than 10 million cubic meters per day of open flow natural gas. On the other hand, Xu Changgui, deputy exploration director of CNOOC, noted, “Exploration in ultra-deep and shallow ultra-deepwater gas fields in the South China Sea faces world-class technical and engineering challenges. The successful test of Lingshui 36-1 represents a major breakthrough in this type of operation“.
The company is committed to continuing to meet the challenges of exploration and development of these resources, with the goal of accelerating the utilization of deepwater natural gas. This commitment is fundamental to improving the country’s sustainability and energy efficiency.

On the other hand, Zhou Xinhuai, chief executive officer and president of CNOOC, detailed:”The South China Sea has been a key region for increasing natural gas reserves and production. Successful test of Lingshui 36-1 further expands resource base for development of gas region with trillion cubic meter potential.
Finally, Zhou Xinhuai added that CNOOC will continue to intensify the exploration and development of hydrocarbon resources in the South China Sea. This effort seeks to improve energy supply capacity and guarantee stability in the supply of resources.
