Globally, today’s energy production revolves around six main industries: oil and gas, electricity, renewable energies, mining, nuclear and bioenergy. Of these, the oil and gas industry continues to be the main energy generator.
One of the modern processes involved in the energy production chain of this industry includes sulfur plants. In them, through advanced processes such as the SuperClaus process, it is possible to increase the efficiency of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) conversion into elemental sulfur to more than 99%, compared to the conventional Claus process. This contributes significantly to the reduction of SO₂ emissions and to the increased operating profitability of the plants, complying with stricter environmental regulations and minimizing the environmental impact of industrial operations.
The modernization of processes makes it possible to capture sulfur and use it instead of releasing it into the environment as a pollutant. In this way, economic value is added by transforming a waste product into a usable product.
For optimal operation of an industrial sulfur plant, its mechanical integrity must be guaranteed. mechanical integrity under adequate and safe operating conditions for all personnel. For this reason, it is essential to carry out the structural rehabilitation of the plant when the equipment has reached its estimated useful life.
One of the most relevant stages during this rehabilitation is the pre-intervention engineering. During this stage, several activities are developed, among which the following stand out:
