China has taken a significant step in the expansion of low-altitude tourism with the successful demonstration flight of the AS700 manned airship. This airship, developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), took off from Zhanghe Airport in Jingmen City, Hubei Province, to showcase its capabilities in tourism flights.
AS700 Technical Specifications
The AS700 is a non-rigid airship with a capacity of 10 persons, including the pilot. This aerial vehicle has a maximum take-off weight of 4,150 kg and can fly up to 700 km with an autonomy of 10 hours. Its design allows takeoffs and landings in restricted areas, making it ideal for scenarios where mobility and flexibility are essential.

The growing low altitude market in China
China’s low-lying economy is a fast-growing sector. According to data from the Civil Aviation Administration of Chinait is estimated that this market exceeded 500 billion yuan in 2023 and is expected to reach 2 trillion yuan by 2030.
AVIC has already signed several contracts of intent for the purchase of the AS700 and is collaborating with local governments to develop tourism demonstration routes, positioning this airship as a pioneer in the low altitude market.
In addition to tourism, the AS700 has potential for use in rescue operations, urban security, and aerial geophysical surveys. This versatile airship promises to be a valuable tool in a variety of applications as China continues to explore the vast potential of its low-altitude airspace.
