Pulsar Fusion is embarking on building the world’s largest fusion-powered rocket engine. His ambitious plan is to develop an 8-meter combustion chamber in just four years.

Pulsar Fusion will use a supercomputer to accurately predict and control the behavior of the plasma, in collaboration with the US company Princeton Satellite Systems.
If successful, the combustion chamber will reach temperatures of hundreds of millions of degrees, providing the energy needed to propel the rocket to speeds in excess of 500,000 miles per hour. An amazing achievement, although still far from the speed of light, which is approximately 1.080 million kilometers per hour!
The Pulsar Fusion project is based on the innovative Direct Fusion Drive (DFD) concept, which seeks to gain momentum directly from fusion. The heart of the DFD engine is a fusion reactor, which takes the form of a cylindrical chamber with electromagnetic coils.
The gas necessary for fusion, such as deuterium and helium-3, is introduced into this chamber. Once the reaction starts, a plasma is generated inside the chamber, which must be constantly fed to keep it working.
The substance in a gaseous state is entered into the chamber from one end and then heated and directed towards the nozzle at the other end, avoiding reaching the plasma state.
Nuclear fusion will significantly shorten travel times between planets, being especially beneficial for future manned missions to Mars .
