The Danish company NKT has been selected by Energinet to execute the electricity connection between the Bornholm energy island and the Selandia region. This new link enhances Denmark’s strategic role as an energy interconnection hub in Europe.
A subsea HVDC system for renewable energy
This contract provides for the design, manufacture and installation of an electric electrical cable system high voltage direct current(HVDC) 525 kV power cable system. The route includes 200 kilometers of underwater route and 16.8 kilometers onshore. Power generated in the Baltic Sea, mainly from offshore wind farms, will be channeled through this infrastructure to the Danish power grid.
[post_relacionado]The island of Bornholm is set to become a strategic location for the distribution of renewable electricity. The project will transmit up to 3.8 GW of power, connecting to both Denmark and Germany in the future.
NKT will manufacture the cables at its Karlskrona plant, which is powered by renewable electricity, reducing the project’s carbon footprint. In addition, the subsea installation will be carried out by the new NKT Eleonora vessel, designed to maximize fuel efficiency and currently under construction.
The contract, valued at approximately EUR 650 million, represents a strategic investment in energy infrastructure. Although it does not change NKT’s financial forecasts for 2025, it does consolidate its presence in European new-generation power transmission projects.
