Voestalpine Railway Systems has marked a turning point by manufacturing the world’s first hydrogen-based rail. The process, developed at its Donawitz plant, combines recycled scrap metal and hydrogen-reduced iron using HYFOR technology. The material is then melted in an electric arc furnace powered by green energy. The result is a steel free of direct CO₂ emissions, without compromising strength or durability.

The first section of the new rail is already in operation at Linz Central Station. This starting point represents tangible proof that the ecological transition in the railway infrastructure is rail infrastructure is not just a goal, but an ongoing reality.

This roadmap is aligned with the European regulatory framework and the demands of the low-emission industrial market.
