The Cartagena Refinery has started the first phase of its solar farm project. This initiative is part of Ecopetrol’ s strategy for energy transition and has achieved a production of 4.4 gigawatts, clean energy, with enough capacity to supply 2,200 Colombian homes annually.
Solar power for the Cartagena Refinery
The impressive project, which spans nearly 20 hectares, houses 40,146 solar panels that are in operation. This infrastructure supplies 34 production units within the refinery, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale self-generation of energy.

Through this production of electricity by means of solar panels solar panelsthe refinery has achieved a reduction of 427 tons of CO2e emissions in the last five months. The company is also preparing for the next phase of the project, which promises to expand the capacity of the solar energy farm.
The completion of the second stage will involve a series of technological adjustments to ensure intelligent and remote operation. Once completed, the solar farm is expected to increase its supply capacity to 34.4 gigawatt hours per year, equivalent to the consumption of 18,200 homes. This will strengthen the refinery’s electrical system, and will also reaffirm Ecopetrol’s leadership in the adoption of clean energy sources.
