Denmark has initiated a project to improve the security of its underwater assets. The initiative is known as U-SHIELD, a technology that proposes the creation of drones with the ability to locate and immobilize unauthorized underwater vehicles, thus protecting communication cables, transport pipelines and offshore wind farms.
Underwater drone response to future threats
Europe’s dependence on complex subsea energy systems has made subsea infrastructure a sensitive target. To meet this challenge, U-SHIELD brings together specialists from Teledyne RESON, Aalborg University, the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Southern Denmark and Copenhagen Subsea. The project has an investment of 26 million kronor provided by the Innovation Fund through its Grand Solutions program .

This approach incorporates advanced vision systems, acoustic sensors and remote control technology to ensure continuous surveillance without putting human operators at risk.
According to Tim Lysholt Jensen, Vice President of Products and Technology at Teledyne RESON, the success of U-SHIELD will depend on collaboration between experts from different disciplines. Innovation Fund director Cecilie Brøkner mentioned that this technology will strengthen Denmark’s energy resilience and benefit other European countries with subsea infrastructure networks.
The implementation of solutions such as U-SHIELD allows for the shielding of marine marine infrastructure against intentional incidents or accidents. With the growing interconnection of energy and communications systems, initiatives of this type strengthen the stability and security of strategic sectors for the continent.
