The battery storage project developed by Transelec for the Granja Solar solar farm, owned by Copec, has reached 64% progress in its construction. This initiative is the first of its kind executed by the company and is part of its strategy to expand into new areas linked to the energy transition.
Chile’s energy storage project
This development is located in the Tarapacá Region. BESS system system will allow the storage of solar energy generated during the day to be used at night. Its configuration includes 154 20-foot containers with battery cells, totaling a capacity of 420 MWh and a nominal power of 105 MW. This will directly contribute to reducing the dumping of renewable energy in the country.
[post_relacionado]The development of the system is part of a BOOT contract, under which Transelec will operate the facility for 20 years before transferring it to Copec. This scheme guarantees efficient and sustained operation over the long term, contributing to the electricity supply with clean and managed energy.
In July, the containers that make up the center of the system arrived in the country, and assembly work began immediately on the prepared foundations. During the remainder of 2025, the necessary connection works will be executed so that the system can start operating in 2026.
For Transelec, this is a turning point. Traditionally focused on electricity transmission, the company is taking decisive steps towards a more diversified portfolio that includes technological solutions in renewable energy. Copec, meanwhile, values the advance as part of its growth strategy in clean energies.
