The technology center AIMPLAS leads the research line to develop coatings with the capacity to actively reduce atmospheric pollution in urban furniture. Under the DACCO2 project, solutions applicable to paints and impermeable fabrics for urban furniture have been created, with the capacity to capture and transform toxic compounds present in the air.
DACCO2 project succeeds in capturing and transforming contaminants
Each of the materials developed integrates direct air capture technologies. direct air capture (DAC)(DAC) that integrate two mechanisms: adsorption and photocatalysis. The former retains harmful particles from the environment, while the latter, through reactions induced by solar energy, oxidizes these substances, converting them into compounds of low or zero toxicity.
[post_relacionado]This dual approach has been designed to ensure efficiency, with no interference between the two processes. The use of these materials in coating matrices seeks to maintain their decontaminating properties in the long term and to adapt to the real conditions of urban furniture.
The initiative has the participation of Laurentia Technologies, Alfarben and Toldos Costa Blanca. These companies provide expertise in materials, technical textile applications and paint formulations, strengthening the applied nature of the project.
It was funded by IVACE+i and the European Regional Development Fund(ERDF), the project is integrated into the non-economic R&D framework promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana for 2024. In addition, it contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially in environmental health and urban sustainability.
DACCO2 also includes a comprehensive study on the main pollutants detected in urban indoor and outdoor spaces. Measurements are compared with WHO limits to identify health risks and emission sources.
With this project we want to advance in technologies that improve air quality and that are effective and economically profitable so that sectors such as the paint or textile industry can use them.
DACCO2 also has the complementary objective of informing and raising awareness of the air pollution problem in society.
Therefore, we are also carrying out a detailed study of the main pollutants present in indoor and outdoor areas of different urban areas of the Valencian Community.
