BASF has launched two new renewable ammonia grades at its Verbund plant in Ludwigshafen, making it the first company in Central Europe to offer a solution such as renewable ammonia production on an industrial scale.
Central Europe’s first renewable ammonia producer
The production of the new ammonia is based on the use of hydrogen from both renewable sources and petroleum. Consequently, the renewable content of the hydrogen is allocated to the renewable ammonia grades, which allows for a considerable reduction of the product’s carbon footprint. This methodology has been certified under ISCC+ standards, which guarantees the traceability and sustainability of the process.
[post_relacionado]The two new grades, renewable ammonia and 24.5% ammonia solution, are available in bulk format and maintain the same functional properties as their conventional counterparts. This makes them an immediate and effective option for industries requiring low carbon footprint solutions.
The vice president of the ammonia value chain at BASF, Dr. Jens Aßmann, has highlighted that this initiative allows to decrease the PCF (product carbon footprint) and is part of the Monomers Division ‘s commitment to offer circular or low-carbon alternatives in all its main product lines by 2025.
Global demand for sustainable ammonia has grown steadily in recent years. Both customers and BASF’s own downstream BASF customers and BASF’s own downstream units require raw materials with a lower environmental impact in order to remain competitive.
