DP World formally started the expansion works of the container terminal at the Port of Maputo, Mozambique, with an investment of 165 million dollars. The objective is to double the operational capacity and turn this port facility into a strategic trade node in Southern Africa.
Upgrading the container terminal at the port of Maputo
The project includes the complete remodeling of the container yard, an extension of the quay length to 650 meters and an increase in berthing depth to 16 meters. With these improvements, the port will be able to receive post-Panamax class vessels of up to 366 meters in length, which will expand the international trade connection routes.
[post_relacionado]Annual throughput will increase from 255,000 to 530,000 TEUs through a 6.48-hectare yard expansion and the incorporation of state-of-the-art technology. The terminal will have three STS cranes, new RTG cranes and a complementary fleet of mobile cranes for efficient cargo handling.
DP World will implement digital solutions such as a vehicle reservation system(VBS), a streamlined operating system(TOS), and a digital community platform(CCS) that will improve integration between shipping lines, customs, and banks. In addition, character recognition technology will be incorporated to streamline access, and CCTV surveillance will be expanded to strengthen operational security.
The new terminal will expand its connection capacity for refrigerated containers from 450 to more than 700 plugs, which will favor the growth of agricultural exports. The improvements will have a positive impact on regional competitiveness, providing landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi with more direct access to international markets.
The project includes the construction of new facilities for personnel, improvements in working conditions and the generation of specialized employment. The Mozambican authorities see this expansion as an engine for inclusive economic growth in the region.
