In a collaboration between Höegh Evi and Wärtsilä Gas Solutions have completed the development of the first floating cracker that converts ammonia into hydrogen. This development aims to improve energy import strategies in Europe by enabling large-scale direct hydrogen production from marine terminals.
The first floating cracker: A scalable technology with global impact
The unit was conceived with a modular design, and will allow integration into dedicated hydrogen terminals as well as hybrid FSRUs. With the capacity to produce up to 210,000 tons of hydrogen per year and store between 10,000 and 120,000 m³ of ammonia, this floating technology aims to meet the growing demand for clean energy with efficient and flexible logistics.
[post_relacionado]This development is part of the Norwegian government’s green platform, which provided about 50% of the budget through Innovation Norway. The construction of the cracker took place at the Norwegian Catapult Center, with the participation of entities such as BASF SE, the Institute of Energy Technology (IFE) and the University of Southeast Norway.
Technology seeks to meet the objectives set out in the strategy REPowerEU strategystrategy, which sets a target of 10 million tons of imported renewable hydrogen by 2030. In addition, Höegh Evi is working on projects that will allow the deployment of this floating infrastructure throughout the continent, facilitating supply to industrial sectors with high energy consumption.
The floating ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker, developed by Höegh Evi, Wärtsilä and its partners, is a turning point for the hydrogen economy and the energy transition in Europe.
