April 14, 2025, marked a new step toward a sustainable energy future in maritime transport, with the official start of construction of the first two Panamax liquefied petroleum gas vessels (VLGCs) in the fleet of seven ordered by Norway’s Solvang.
The steel-cutting ceremony took place at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries ‘ Ulsan, South Korea, facility where the entire series will be built. These first vessels, identified as hulls 3458 and 3459, are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and feature a capacity of 88,000 cubic meters and integrated emissions-reducing technologies.
A ship construction with carbon capture
[post_relacionado]The new vessels are designed with ECO hull lines and will fully incorporate Solvang’s environmental package . They will be prepared to implement onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems , including low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, hybrid scrubbers with open and closed-loop water treatment, and electrostatic filters that remove up to 95% of particulate matter.
In addition, an additional deck for CO₂ tanks, larger auxiliary engines, and additional crew space have been provided, ensuring long and sustainable operations.
Versatile energy, controlled emissions
Unlike dual-fuel configurations, these VLGCs will be equipped with a single liquid fuel system compatible with HFO, low-sulfur fuel oil, MGO, biofuels , and e-fuels. This configuration responds to an energy transition strategy that combines operational efficiency with adaptability to future environmental standards.
From Solvang, Fleet Director Tor Øyvind Ask stated that these vessels will allow them to operate with a minimal carbon footprint and comply with the most demanding regulations, without compromising economic efficiency.
The company projects the remaining five vessels will be delivered by 2027. This series represents a capacity expansion and a paradigm shift toward smart, clean vessels ready to meet the climate and regulatory challenges of the near future.
