A team from the University of Jyväskylä, in collaboration with the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), has developed a portable radiation detector capable of identifying all types of ionizing radiation . This breakthrough promises to transform safety in industrial, medical, nuclear, and emergency settings .
Multiple functions in a single device
This new compact detector uses multilayer Phoswich technology, which combines different scintillation materials to create a comprehensive detection system. Thanks to this configuration, the device acts as five sensors in one, allowing for the precise detection of alpha, beta, gamma, X-ray, and neutron radiation. Its modular design makes it easy to adapt to different field conditions.
The detector provides a complete picture of the radiological situation in a short time and with great efficiency, without the need to carry multiple devices.

Field applications and operational advantages
[post_relacionado]This equipment is designed for operations where time and precision are critical. Its directional gamma ray detection capability facilitates the location of emitting sources, a crucial feature in official inspections or radioactive material smuggling situations.
Neutron radiation detection, vital for identifying materials like plutonium, improves the characterization of nuclear sources . It also allows for the detection of surface contamination through wipe sampling , which is key for medical and industrial environments. The results of this research were recently published in a specialized scientific journal , reinforcing its technical validity.
A scalable and lightweight radiation detector
Weighing less than two kilograms, the device is ready for integration into portable monitoring systems, backpacks, vehicles, and drones. Its integrated digital architecture reduces electronic complexity , which could allow for even lighter future versions.
The technology is currently patented and industrial partners are being sought for commercialization. The developers aim to create a complete family of radiation safety devices based on this technology.
In addition, the detector will serve as a training base for the future Master’s program in Security Technology and Risk Management, which will begin in 2026 at the University of Jyväskylä.
