Energy company MOL Group has made a significant discovery, announcing a new oil field near Somogysámson, in western Hungary. Exploration drilling conducted in December last year revealed the well is located at a depth of 1,250 meters and has an estimated production capacity of 1,200 barrels of oil per day.
The new oil field in Hungary
Over the past few years, MOL has made several important discoveries in Hungary, increasing oil and natural gas production in areas such as Vecsés and Tura, which has allowed it to reach its highest national production in the last five years. According to Dr. György Bacsa, Chief Operating Officer of MOL Hungary, this new field will be crucial to increasing oil reserves and minimizing the country’s dependence on crude oil imports.

The success of the Bázakerettye concession, which boasts a nearly 100-year oil-producing tradition, clearly demonstrates that there is still potential for hydrocarbon exploration in Hungary.

This new well will be transported to the Danube refinery in Százhalombatta, representing approximately 1% of MOL’s total hydrocarbon production. Despite geopolitical and economic challenges, the company remains committed to developing energy solutions and expanding its operations in Hungary.
