The UK has welcomed with great anticipation the arrival of Fortescue Green Pioneer, the first dual-fuel ammonia and diesel ship to the country. The Singapore-flagged vessel has docked at the Port of Southampton, marking a significant step forward in the transition to more sustainable shipping.
Fortescue Green Pioneer and zero-emission fuel
Ammonia is seen as a viable alternative for decarbonising maritime transport. This fuel emits no carbon when burned , which could drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping sector.

The Fortescue Green Pioneer is powered by four-stroke engines, two of which can run on ammonia and diesel, allowing a gradual transition away from fossil fuels.
Government support and regulations
The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency has worked closely with the Fortescue team to ensure compliance with national regulations. The arrival of this vessel on British soil is a sign of the government’s commitment to innovation and the adoption of clean technologies in the maritime industry .
Maritime Minister Mike Kane said initiatives of this type were part of the UK SHORE programme, which aims to promote the use of alternative fuels and establish the UK as a leader in clean energy.
Exhibition and future evaluations
Following her stay in Southampton, Fortescue Green Pioneer will head to West India Dock in London where she will be presented to key maritime stakeholders, regulators and the public. During this period, technical inspections will be carried out to assess the operational viability of ammonia as a marine fuel.
Fortescue CEO Andrew Forrest said the ship represents the transition to fossil- free shipping. He also stressed the importance of the International Maritime Organization establishing regulations that will drive the adoption of zero-emission fuels globally.
