MITSUI E&S is making headway in the maritime industry, having begun testing its first dual-fuel, two-stroke ammonia engine. This advance strengthens the adoption of alternative fuels in global maritime transport.
The first tests of the two-stroke ammonia engine
The prototype, named MAN B&W 7S60ME-LGIA (-Liquid Gas Injection Ammonia) Mk 10.5 , has entered testing at the Tamano plant in Japan. The 60-inch bore engine is designed to run on ammonia. By using the high-pressure selective catalytic reduction ( HPSCR ) system developed by MAN Energy Solutions , it is able to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations.

This engine will be installed on a 200,000 dwt bulk carrier built by Imabari Shipbuilding for a joint venture between “K” LINE, NS United and ITOCHU Corp. Operating experience at sea is also expected to provide vital information for improving the system’s performance and reliability.
We expect to introduce our 50, 60, 70 and 80 diameter ME-LGIA ammonia engines to the market by the end of 2026, but the exact timing will be subject to the respective shipbuilding schedules.
