SBM Offshore has signed an agreement with Petrobras to develop a study on the implementation of CO2 capture modules in floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSO). This initiative seeks to reduce carbon emissions in oil and gas production , aligning with the industry’s sustainability goals.
CO2 capture modules for emissions reduction
The design of the carbon capture module is based on Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI)’s patented ” Advanced KM CDR Process ” technology, which has already been validated by DNV.
[post_relacionado]This system allows for efficient CO2 capture and storage , reducing the carbon footprint of offshore operations. The solution integrates with SBM Offshore’s Fast4ward approach, facilitating its implementation in future FPSOs.
Evaluating configurations for Petrobras FPSO
The study will cover different carbon capture configurations for FPSOs in Petrobras fields, taking into account:
- Different types of turbines and installed machinery.
- Variations in gas flow rates and turbine powers.
- Various CO2 concentrations and gas composition.
A step towards offshore decarbonisation
Olivier Icyk, Commercial Director of SBM Offshore, stressed that this study reinforces Petrobras’ confidence in the company as a key player in the energy transition.
The signing of this study demonstrates the confidence that Petrobras has in SBM Offshore as a pioneer company in ocean infrastructure. We continue to work towards decarbonization solutions in the design of our products and in our offshore operations. Through this study, we will be able to advance in the design of carbon capture modules together with our partner MHI for CO2 reduction in future FPSOs.
