A team from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has made a significant breakthrough in the field of prosthetics by developing a lightweight, highly functional artificial hand with 19 degrees of freedom . This innovation represents a major advance in rehabilitation technology for people with upper limb amputations.
What advantages does the USTC robotic hand offer?
The human hand possesses 23 degrees of freedom, making it one of the most complex structures in the body. Traditionally, hand prostheses have faced limitations due to the low power density of their motorized mechanisms, making it difficult to integrate a high degree of mobility without compromising weight and functionality.
[post_relacionado]To overcome this obstacle, USTC researchers incorporated shape memory alloys (SMAs) as artificial actuators , combined with a biomimetic tendon-based transmission system. This design amplifies the force generated by the actuators, reduces mechanical resistance, and improves movement efficiency.

This prosthetic hand integrates 23 sensors distributed across the fingers and wrist , allowing for precise control that can be adapted to the person’s natural movements. It also features a cooling module that optimizes the performance of the 38 SMA actuators, allowing the hand to perform movements with dexterity comparable to that of a human hand.
Another notable feature is its voice recognition control system , which makes it easy to use in different environments and allows users to execute commands quickly and accurately. Compatible with more than 60 languages and 20 dialects, this functionality expands its accessibility and ease of use.

The innovative design of this prosthesis allows the user to perform everyday tasks such as writing, combing hair, holding delicate objects or even performing complex sign language gestures.
