Boom Supersonic announced its new “Boomless Cruise” technology, which will enable silent flights . This innovation allows supersonic flights without the characteristic sonic boom, opening up the possibility of high-speed flights over land without generating annoying noise.
First silent supersonic flight
On January 28, 2025, Boom’s XB-1 demonstrator aircraft made its first supersonic flight without producing any perceptible sonic booms on the ground . During this historic flight, the XB-1 broke the sound barrier three times , reaching a maximum speed of Mach 1.12.
Specialized microphone arrays confirmed that the shock waves did not reach the ground, validating the company’s prediction models and improving its algorithms.
The technology relies on the “Mach limit,” a physical phenomenon that allows the sonic boom to be refracted in the atmosphere and not reach the ground. This is achieved by flying at altitudes above 30,000 feet and adjusting speed based on atmospheric conditions. The Symphony propulsion system , designed specifically for the Overture, facilitates this type of silent flight .

Overture: The fastest and most sustainable passenger aircraft
The world’s fastest passenger jet, Overture is designed to fly up to 50 percent faster over land and twice as fast over water compared to today’s jets. With ” Boomless Cruise ,” it will be able to operate at speeds of up to Mach 1.3 without generating audible booms. This will reduce U.S. coast-to-coast flight times by up to 90 minutes and open up new international routes.
The company has optimized the Overture to use up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The company is also working with partners such as American Airlines, United Airlines and Japan Airlines, who have already placed pre-orders for the Overture. In addition, the Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina, is ready to produce up to 66 aircraft per year.
The future of supersonic flights
Symphony engine testing is scheduled for late 2025, focusing on compressor, combustion chamber and turbine section performance. These advancements cement Boom’s commitment to sustainable aviation and global accessibility through faster, quieter flights.
